community building - liberty village, toronto, canada
A former industrial area consisting of five square blocks in the heart of downtown Toronto, Canada, Liberty Village has grown from just 220 residents to over 7400 - in just 12 years. Primarily consisting of high rise towers of up to 32 stories, it was designed without mixed uses and excellent transit options. From an urban planning standpoint, this massive development shouldn't thrive - but it has. The Liberty Village Residents' Association became the world's largest in under five years with a demographic that is primarily millenials. Integration with the business community, social connection through offline events, and extremely well managed social media created a 100% population penetration and membership. This engaged neighbourhood has also helped spur and support the primarily creative business community next door and is now in demand as a incubator and tech hub.
As an example of our combination of social media and offline events, "Single de Mayo" was created! A combination of a "Cards Against Humanity" tournament and club night for singles, it was a massive hit - while generating money for the Lifetime Foundation to fight homelessness. Making a difference matters and Communify understands this new reality amongst millenials and high rise dwellers alike as living co-operatively makes the "other" visible, real and easy to empathize with. Doing good. Having fun. It's what we live for!
Creating a vision for your community, both in a single highrise condominium or amongst a community of them, is no small feat. It takes time, effort, volunteers, outreach, 1000's of discussions and commitment to create the Trust that's essential for a community to thrive. It can be daunting for sure, but we are here to help you design a plan and give you the tools you need to succeed. Volunteer training, a nimble implemenation that can adapt to your community's culture, and ways to measure your success are equally important. It's grassroots organizing minus the politics plus a lot more love. Coincidentally, it's more effective as well!
